He was born born February 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. He began his political career as a <a class="wiki_link_ext" href="http://sc94.ameslab.gov/TOUR/alincoln.html" rel="nofollow">Illinois Legislator</a>. He then became a lawyer in 1836. A few years later he met and married a woman by the name of Marry Todd and together thay had <a class="wiki_link_ext" href="http://home.att.net/~rjnorton/Lincoln77.html" rel="nofollow">four children</a>. He was then nominated for president in <a class="wiki_link_ext" href="http://www.tulane.edu/~latner/Background/BackgroundElection.html" rel="nofollow">1860</a> and won the election. President Lincoln delivered the <a class="wiki_link_ext" href="http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/gadd/gadrft.html" rel="nofollow">Gettsburg Address</a> on November 19, 1863. He also issued the <a class="wiki_link_ext" href="http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/featured_documents/emancipation_proclamation/" rel="nofollow">Emancipation Proclamation</a> on Janurary 1, 1863. However, his greatest challenge through out his presidency was the <a class="wiki_link_ext" href="http://www.civilwar.com/" rel="nofollow">civil war</a>.
